BREAKING: Former President Barack Obama throws his full support behind Governor Gavin Newsom’s brilliant plan to redistrict California to balance out any Republican seats added in the shocking gerrymandering plot in Texas.
MAGA started an arms race that it can’t win…
“I believe that Gov. Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach,” Obama said at a fundraiser in Massachusetts. “We’re only going to do it if and when Texas and/or other Republican states begin to pull these maneuvers. Otherwise, this doesn’t go into effect.”
Thanks to a direct request from Donald Trump, Texas Republicans are currently ramming through a vote to add five new red-leaning districts, a deeply anti-democratic move that will dilute the votes of Black and Latino voters. Their goal is to give Trump a fighting chance at holding the U.S. House in the mid-term elections despite his sinking popularity, failed economic policies, and worsening Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Rather than sit by idly as Republicans dismantle our electoral process, Gavin Newsom is pushing to redistrict his state to create more blue seats and balance out any gains that Trump might get in Texas. Unlike Republicans, Newsom is leaving the decision up to voters and it will be decided by a California ballot measure.
“I’ve had to wrestle with my preference, which would be that we don’t have political gerrymandering, but what I also know is that if we don’t respond effectively, then this White House and Republican-controlled state governments all across the country, they will not stop, because they do not appear to believe in this idea of an inclusive, expansive democracy,” said Obama. “They want to restrict it, and they’re not that shy about saying so.”
“That is not my preference, but we cannot unilaterally allow one of the two major parties to rig the game, and California is one of the states that has the capacity to offset a large state like Texas,” he added.
Obama’s words echo exactly how a lot of Democrats are feeling right now. We tried to play fair, we tried to pass a ban on gerrymandering, but Republicans blocked it. They’re now accelerating their efforts to entrench their unpopular rule. Either we fight back or watch our democracy crumble.
